Chop off our hands?

Justin asks:

Why did Jesus tell us to chop our hands off and poke out our eyes?
Denny answers:

Jesus is telling us get rid of the sin that is in our lives.

Jesus did not actually mean that we should hurt our bodies, but that we should cut out the sin in our lives.

Jesus meant that we should get rid of anything in our lives that is causing us to sin. He wants us to remember He is the most important part of our life – anything that makes us forget about Him and sin is something we must destroy and avoid at all costs.

Bible Truth
  • “Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come! If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life [heaven] maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire [hell]. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away…” (Matthew 18:7-9a).

  • “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1).

  • “…through the fear of the Lord a man avoids evil” (Proverbs 16:6b).
