Why does Jesus tell us to follow Him?

Mariah asks:

Why does Jesus tell us to follow Him?

Denny answers:

Following Jesus is the only way to please God and get to heaven.

God sent Jesus to live a perfect life. Because no one else is perfect, Jesus died for the sins of those who follow Him. Sadly, most people want to go their own way - not follow Jesus. Going your own way means making your own decisions about what is right or wrong. If you go your own way, you cannot please God and will have to be separated from Him forever in hell.

You must turn from going your own way to follow Jesus. Instead of doing whatever you want to do, you make Him the boss of your life. Follow Jesus by knowing Him like a best friend, following His example, and obeying His commands in the Bible. Of course, Jesus' followers sometimes fail. But God has forgiven them. Why? They are following Jesus who lived perfectly and died for sin. Turn to follow Jesus today!

Bible Truth
  • "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me'" (John 14:6).

  • "Then Jesus said to his followers, 'If people want to follow me, they must give up the things they want. They must be willing even to give up their lives to follow me. Those who want to save their lives will give up true life, and those who give up their lives for me will have true life. It is worthless to have the whole world if they lose their souls. They could never pay enough to buy back their souls. The Son of Man will come again with his Father's glory and with his angels. At that time, he will reward them for what they have done" (Matthew 16:24-27, NCV).

  • "This is what you were called to do, because Christ suffered for you and gave you an example to follow. So you should do as he did. 'He had never sinned, and he had never lied.' People insulted Christ, but he did not insult them in return. Christ suffered, but he did not threaten. He let God, the One who judges rightly, take care of him. Christ carried our sins in his body on the cross so we would stop living for sin and start living for what is right. And you are healed because of his wounds" (1 Peter 2:21-24, NCV).
