What does it mean to pray continually?

Mariah asks:

What does it mean to pray continually?
Denny answers:

Praying continually means nothing should stop you from prayer. It means you should never give up the habit of praying.

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 says, “pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Don’t worry. Praying continually does not mean you have to kneel for the rest of your life with your hands folded and eyes closed!

You can still do other things. But the more you pray, the more you will find you can pray anytime and anywhere, even while you are on the bus, playing soccer, or doing chores. You don’t have to close your eyes or speak out loud to pray. God can hear your silent prayer.

If you walk outside in the rain, you might pray, “Thank You, Lord, for this rain to water the earth. Please keep me safe on the ride to school.”

When your mom calls you to do your homework, you may pray, “God, I don’t feel like doing my homework, but I pray You would help me have a good attitude and do my best.”

After you say a mean word to your brother, you might pray, “I’m sorry I was not kind to my brother. Thank You that Jesus died on the cross for my sin, and He can give me the strength next time to be kind. I praise You for how good, holy, and forgiving You are.”

Praying continually reminds you that God is in control and that you need to obey and rely on God moment by moment. Praying continually helps you be joyful and give thanks to God always.

Bible Truth
  • “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful” (Colossians 4:2).

  • “God, whom I serve with my whole heart in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you” (Romans 1:9-10).

  • “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (Romans 12:12).
