Why do all people die?

Mariah asks:

Why do all people die?
Denny answers:

Death is the result of sin.

God created the world perfectly. The first humans, Adam and Eve, were not supposed to die. They weren't even supposed to grow old, to get wrinkles or grey hair. God made them to live forever.

But Adam and Eve's sin ended their happy lives. They ate the fruit that God had told them not to eat. When they disobeyed God, their punishment was death. Their sin made everything else in the world imperfect, too. Everything living now gets old and dies.

While we will all die, we won't all go to the same place after we die. Those who trust Jesus as the one who died for their sins will go to heaven. Those who reject Jesus have to be separated from God in hell because of their sins. In heaven, everyone will live forever. No one will ever die again because they are free from the curse sin brought to the world.

Bible Truth
  • "The LORD God commanded him, 'You may eat the fruit from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat the fruit from the tree which gives the knowledge of good and evil. If you ever eat fruit from that tree, you will die!'" (Genesis 2:16-17).

  • "The payment for sin is death. But God gives us the free gift of life forever in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23, NCV).
  • "We know that our body - the tent we live in here on earth - will be destroyed. But when that happens, God will have a house for us. It will not be a house made by human hands; instead, it will be a home in heaven that will last forever" (2 Corinthians 5:1, NCV).
