What is a cult?

Here's the answer:

A cult is a belief system that teaches wrong beliefs about God.

Many of us think a cult is something related to evil, but a cult is actually any belief system that teaches false beliefs about God. The most well-known cults are Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Both of these cults teach beliefs that are different than the Bible presents.

A cult may teach about God, but have false views about Him. Since they don’t believe in the right view of God, they are not saved. Most cults don’t believe Jesus is God. The Bible teaches that the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all God. They are One God, three distinct Persons. Nobody can reject Jesus and still have the Father (John 3:36).

In addition to denying the divinity of Jesus, cults teach that salvation is by works. The Bible tells us salvation is through believing in Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9). We cannot “earn” our salvation. Our good will never outweigh our bad. Salvation is only by believing in Jesus. We need to help those who are involved with cults know about Jesus. We can do this by being their friend and talking with them about Jesus.

Bible Truth

"Anyone who believes in the Son has eternal life. Anyone who does not believe in the Son will not have life. God’s anger remains on them" (John 3:36).

"I say this because many people have tried to fool others. These people have gone out into the world. They don’t agree that Jesus Christ came in a human body. People like this try to trick others. These people are like the great enemy of Christ" (2 John 1:7).

"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit. Test the spirits to see if they belong to God. Many false prophets have gone out into the world. Here is how you can recognize the Spirit of God. Every spirit agreeing that Jesus Christ came in a human body belongs to God. But every spirit that doesn’t agree with this does not belong to God. You have heard that the spirit of the great enemy of Christ is coming. Even now it is already in the world" (1 John 4:1-3).
