Jesus lived on earth about 2,000 years ago, but He has always been living as God the Son!
Your grandparents were probably born 60 or 70 years ago. But Jesus was born more than 2,000 years ago! His birth is the most important birth in all history. In fact, we measure time by when Jesus was born. For example, 2010 A.D. is about 2010 years after Jesus was born. 500 B.C. is about 500 years before Jesus Christ was born (B.C. stands for “before Christ” and A.D. stand for “anno domini” meaning “in the year of our Lord”).
Each of us had a beginning inside our mothers, but Jesus has always existed, even before He was born! Before the world began, Jesus was always with God and was God (John 1:1-2). God is one God in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As God the Son, Jesus is eternal with no beginning or end.
Jesus became a human about 2,000 years ago when He was born to the virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit—so Jesus’ Father is God (Luke 1:26-35). The Son of God took on a human body when He came to earth, but Jesus never stopped being God the Son (John 1:14). He is God and Man at the same time—the perfect God-Man.
When Jesus was on earth, He claimed to be alive before He was born. He told some Jews who didn’t believe in Him, “‘Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.’ ‘You are not yet fifty years old,’ the Jews said to him, ‘and you have seen Abraham!’ ‘I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’ At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds” (John 8:56-59).
Abraham was alive hundreds of years before Jesus was born, so the Jews couldn’t understand how Jesus saw Abraham. But Jesus claimed to exist eternally before Abraham. He used God’s special name, “I am” (Exodus 3:14). That’s why the Jews tried to throw stones at Jesus, because He claimed to be God.
Jesus is God! Read the Bible verses below to see that Jesus is the perfect God-Man. Jesus is alive eternally and gives believing sinners eternal life.
Bible Truth
- “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:1-3).
- “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
- “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:15-20).
